HEW focusses on celebrating the talents of local designers, and giving people an opportunity to wear unique and beautiful prints that showcase these designers' skills. Now HEW wants you to get to know these incredible artists a bit better, so we sat down with one of our amazing Osment designers, Laura Barnard. Laura originally hails from our cousin across the ocean, New Zealand, but now calls Melbourne home. Her art, however, lives whimsically in a fantasy world inspired by places near and far, and her vivid imagination.
Most of your work has a whimsical element, are there certain books or ideas that inspire your artworks?
I am definitely heavily inspired by Japanese art, ancient and new. I find the detail amazing and also there's that whimsical element as well.
What’s your favourite medium/tools to work with when your creating your artworks?
For my illustrations, my go to is watercolour, occasionally gouache and tiny paint brushes! For my pattern, I usually use gouache and acrylic ink.
It must be so energising when you’re in a creative flow but how do you let go or unwind when you just need to shut off from the world, and your work, for a while?
To be honest, I find it it very difficult to wind down at all, my mind buzzed for a long while after. The only thing that really does wind me down is doing yoga. But I have to go to my yoga studio to do so and not at home, as I will often still buzz and stop halfway through to do more work!
What’s your go to piece of clothing?
Probably a pair of high waist jeans, t-shirt and many knits! I also recently have stolen from my boyfriend a wide brim, non-floppy brown hat.
What’s your favourite Instagram account at the moment?
Definitely New Darlings! A gorgeous couple who I totally look up to style-wise.
What’s on your bedside table?
A drink bottle, a candle, a small basket with things like chapstick in it and a plant.
